living here
in the same building
you don’t stop
we don’t talk
torment lurks within my soul
you just don’t see it
sitting here
alone on the stairs
you’re aware
of my gaze
sorrow lies behind these eyes
you just won’t see it
existing
in separate worlds
minds don’t meet
hearts don’t open
but then, behind the façade
I see your sadness

The image shows shows a well-dressed young man of African descent sitting on stairs. His hands are gripping the railing and he is staring intently at the camera.

That’s such a fitting song for the intent behind my poem. Thanks for reminding me of it, Robbie – it’s so beautiful and sad.

It is a very sad song, Chris. I often think of it when I hear about abuse of children. Sometimes I feel I can’t bear all the sad and horrible things in life. Thank goodness for writing, reading, and artwork which make me happy. And my beautiful sons, of course.

Lost in our own worlds…and the way society expects us to react in these litigious days only makes us more distant.
Great poem, Chris.

That’s absolutely right, Val. We all share that ‘common humanity’.

I remember living in big cities. Apartment buildings… mostly the elevators were riden in silence.
You might know the neighbor to the left, right and across the hall… For so many people the city can be a lonely place.

Very true. High-rise living doesn’t encourage friendships generally.

I can’t imagine some of the highrise buildings.
So many people – not enough air…
But then I used to live in larger cities and thought nothing of it. It is just what one is used to.

I’ve mostly been a city girl, but never above 3 floors high!

One apartment I lived on was the tenth floor and it wasn’t the highest in that building! The city I live near has a rule to not build higher than six stories…(floors) but I think there are a few exceptions.

My knees would now rule out more than a single flight of stairs, just in case the lift broke down!

I haven’t gotten that far yet. The ‘flights’ in my home at the front door are each ‘half’. So I’m still managing. – take care!!
