Over the Fence

“I don’t know what those things are called, do I? I’m not a gardener. No, definitely not. I mean it looks okay, although some veg is more productive, as long as it’s something I like. You know, like toms, they are nice. I’m not keen on the green stuff though.”

“Are you talking to yourself?”
“What, me?”
“Yes, you!”

“Well, I suppose so… and what’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing, I guess.”

(silence)

“Are you a little lonely, perhaps?”
“No.”
“Really?”
“No.”

(silence)

“Look, I’m busy. Okay?

“You don’t want to tell me what you’re doing?”

(muttering)

“Alright, I’ll tell you…”

“Yes. Look out there.”
“I’m looking outside, I’m driving, aren’t I. And all the way to New Mexico too.”
“But I’m convinced that there is a UFO up there by the clouds… just there. Moving very oddly.”
“I can’t look all around while I’m driving.”
“We could take a break though?”
“Let’s do that.”
“Yep, there’s room there.”

“Grab some drinks. Let’s go up there.”
“Quite a walk, but it’ll be worth it.”

“Okay, we’ll stop there… and look over there. On the right, and up a bit more.”

“That’s it!”
“Gosh, I think you’re right…”

What? It’s coming down?
No, surely not.
But it is.

Look, over there. See, that thing is not part of that cloud.
What?
It’s not just that cloud, it’s too dense.
Dense? That sounds like you.
What?
Sorry, just making a joke… ish.
More than feeble, but never mind about that. That cloud, is not a cloud; that is something much more interesting.
So what?

Well, it’s moving more quickly… and lower now. Oh, but now we can’t see it, since the mountain is in the way. Damn!
So what are you thinking?

The two of them would continue to stay there all the time.
They’re very close to the lovely lake, such a good idea.
Pretty, too.

Maybe they are thinking.

Okay, time to get rid of all this stuff, as she smiled to herself. All this waste of nonsense, it’s got to go, and soon, very soon.
She began to move things around. Aha, there’s a big box here, and another big box there, plus many, many cartons. There are even in those darkest areas, there are some old tea chests. She’s determined not to open any of those.
Really?
Yep, she’s focused.
Should she have a little poke inside?
No. Don’t even think about that. No… and no.
Hmm.
Shall she do this for another day?
Yep, that’s fine.

Ooh, a keyhole

‘Look, a huge keyhole over there.’
‘Let’s get closer,’ as the two boys hurried across.

‘It’s an interesting opening.’
‘Ouch.’
‘It’s… it’s, what?’
‘Perspex, perhaps?’

Gingerly, both of them touched the see-through wall.
‘Weird.’
‘Intriguing though.’

One of the boys tried to press his face to see further. The other one saw an interesting plaque.
‘Look, it’s a dragon up there.’
‘Can we touch it?’

‘Ooh, sweet, isn’t it!’
‘But it’s not helping, sadly.’
‘Oh well, it’s teatime now, but we’ll be back.’

The two boys had gone, so the tiny dragon burst out and grinned:
‘Hasta la vista, baby!’

“’Fraid so.”
“I’m sure I’ve given enough of this. Or maybe too much?”

“Well, they seem fairly dry, but they should be okay for the moment.”
“If you say so.”
“I do.”
“Is that it then?”

“I’m just a bit worried about all of those. I wouldn’t want something to happen to them.”
“Like what?”
“Oh, I don’t know.”
“Indeed.”

“And look, they seemed to have perked up a bit.”
“Well, that’s a relief, isn’t it?”
“And, in any case, it’s not a huge problem.”
“No indeed. They’re only little triffids after all.”

“Ooh, gosh, what a wonderful spread, and we haven’t even got to the table yet.”
“Awesome isn’t it?”
“I’m just craning over several tables to see what people are eating. No, I don’t think it’s rude. I’m just wondering what I might choose.”

“I’m going to call that waiter… rather attractive, isn’t he, don’t you think?”
“Ah, we should also think about wine.”
“Hmm, definitely a bottle of wine, and that will be fine.”

The two of them went quiet for a couple of minutes.
The waiter appeared.
Then soon everything was sorted.

“Now all we need is a selfie!”
