growing up on distant continents
without a common tongue
lives so seemingly different
rich north, poor south
experiences diametrically opposed
.
and yet
sharing corresponding smiles
weeping mutual sorrows
our hearts are touched
by the same love and loss
.
because, in the end
we are all
sisters under the skin
Written in response to Sadje’s What Do You See #58 photo prompt.

This is a very touching poem Chris. Moved me to tears. Thanks for joining in my friend

When I first came to South Africa and was working with a small group of women from different cultures and mother tongues, it was the simple emotional reactions that brought home to me the fact that that under the surface we had more similarities than differences. It is that experience, which immediately came to mind when I saw the photo. I’m very touched that my words provoked such a reaction in you, my friend 🙂

It is the reality that underneath the skin color, cultures and tongues, we are very similar to each other. A beautiful poem

Absolutely beautiful. Rings in so true. If only people saw beyond color, we would have a global family 🙂

Another gem from your pen…Had read a book recently about a theory of how the first lot of men migrated from Africa and spread all over the world and therefore almost 80 pct of people can actually trace their roots to the same origin and hence are brothers/sisters. Your poem reinforces that. Brilliant!
Also inserted a germ of an idea in my head. Thank you.

They do say that the first humans came from the African continent and migrated northwards and beyond, so there’s a lot of shared DNA. I guess that means a tiny piece of me has come home.
