All aboard, all aboard!
Cogs whirr, chains clank
pistons pump and gears crank
hang onto your hats and don’t look down
Bethelbert’s ride is the best in town
feast your eyes on the folk down there
open-mouthed they stand and stare
passing over the hills and dales
the ocean’s in sight, do you see those whales?
clouds above and sea below
which way’s up I’d love to know
hold on tight and live your dream
in Bethelbert’s marvellous mystery machine!

Ah it does fit with the Beatles… but I also thought of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ the flying car 😀

I just remember everyone singing in the flying car… Happy.
But I’ve got other nightmares too…
Some simple children’s stories were meant to teach morals and scare young folk.

Isn’t that strange? My husband also cringes at the thought of the kid-catcher character. You’re right about the kid’s stories – and the illustrations in some of them!

Many children’s rhymes as well as some faithful holiday tunes are very political – if you know how to look for their hidden meanings. We take for granted the pleasing tune that has become associated with just happiness and delight, but some started out as a protest or warning. Even signals of rebellion.
