As Joey stepped over the threshold, the music he’d heard from outside the building stopped abruptly; light filtered from the lofty windows, illuminating the dust-motes that danced in the large space before him, empty apart from a long wooden counter running along one wall with a dozen mis-matched chairs arranged at intervals along it.
Joey looked around, at the far side of the room was an imposing entrance door, topped with a fancy fanlight; Joey jogged over and drew aside the heavy steel bolts before twisting the night-latch; the door swung open easily. After pulling the door closed and hearing the latch click home, Joey sprinted up the three stone steps to street level. Suddenly the music started up again; Joey looked around, puzzled for a moment, before hurrying off up the narrow side street.
Emerging onto busy Bold Street, Joey ducked inside the nearest shop, its interior thick with cigarette smoke and lined with TV screens; the little camel statue in his pocket vibrated, pursuers forgotten, Joey approached the counter, ‘2.30 at Aintree, two quid on Oracle to win.’
Meanwhile, in the flat below Joey’s, Ceridwen turned over the Five of Swords: the tarot card predicting a cheap victory.

Hmnm… mystery of the musical building aside, it looks as though some good fortune is heading to Joey.

Thanks, Di! This week’s words took Joey in a slightly unexpected direction, almost coinciding with the Grand National 🏇

Thanks, Zelda. The tarot cards are proving… interesting.

I wouldn’t touch them with a ten-foot pole! But I suppose they work well in fiction 🙂

Is this part of the next book?

Actually no, this is a kind of continuation from my novel, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the end of which Joey finds the Jade Camel. So far, I’ve only used some minor characters from the book, but that may change soon (if they get their way).

Mystery and beautiful language, Chris. And a wee respite and bit of fun (I hope) for Joey.

Thanks, Jenne. I think young Joey must enjoy himself for a little while before I plunge him into deeper trouble.

Nicely done capturing the vibe of a bookies back then, pre-smoking ban too! Was never a regular horses gambler, but used to enjoy the odd Saturday morning in Ladbrookes or Hills having a flutter. Hope Joey’s horse comes in!

The old bookies were pretty dreadful – not that I spent much time in one. I always had a flutter on the Grand National though. I almost got the timing right too… pity a horse called Oracle didn’t win a couple of weeks ago!

Sounds intriguing, Chris. I like what you’ve done with the prompts. That final paragraph is very neat.

That music may have been tempting him to stay. I wonder if his horse will win the race.

The music was surely a temptation, Frank. Shall I let Joey’s horse win? I think so.

Yes, that would be a nice omen to add to the story.

Joey is off the hook. For the moment, lol. Courtesy of the jade camel??
Smooth going, Chris. But I bet that’s not going to last too long!

I’m sure the camel is behind a lot of the action in this episode, Denise. Will Joey’s luck last? Mmm, probably not.

He’s certainly a cool cucumber, stepping into a betting parlor after such a narrow escape. Maybe he needs more money to travel faster to get away…

My mind keeps going back to the word, “cheap” in correlation with the victory. I don’t think he will be as lucky with the Oracle as he would have hoped! 🙂

I’m pretty sure Joey’s luck won’t last too long… but I think I should at least let the horse win!

surely one of the most curious of ‘effects’ in life, the impact of music heard continuously coming to an abrupt end…very loud transition, that.
then, that thing about huge doors swinging like a feather… only on place I’m aware of would those two things be likely…. SSC&B

Spot on, Clark. There’s only one place that strange building could have been. I wonder how it came to make an appearance in a side street in Liverpool? But, hold on, everywhere is just a step away in fantasy.
Like your comment about the ghosts…

Too often bad things follow good, so enjoy the moment Joey! Btw, I lost a tenner on the Grand National, but good things followed bad!
