Is this the road I should be on
the path I ought to follow?
I feel as if I’ve lost my way
caught up in toil and trouble.
I’m looking for a brighter path,
one filled with joy, not sorrow.
I place my hand upon the gate
but still my heart is hollow.
So many years meandering
I’ve drifted week to week,
but maybe if I enter here
I’ll find the place I seek.

The image shows a wrought iron gate with the words “the way” written on it. There’s a path beyond the closed gate leading into a tree-lined lane

This is a wonderful and profound poem, Chris. Excellent use of this rhyme pattern; and, of course, a fine question.

Really nice, Chris, but my Piscean side is pointing out something… the grass on the other side may be greener… 🤔 but finding hope is a lot better than constantly searching for it!

What a gate! To know The Way so overtly would be wonderful, wouldn’t it? A lovely poem, Chris, with a question many of us ask at some time in our lives. Enjoy the journey.

It would, but then where would be the happy surprises? As you said over at Sally’s, good to be in the moment and enjoy. Have a great weekend, Diana!

Your verse reminds me of a huge metal gate that once belonged to a private home but is now in Central Park NYC, NY. I don’t remember who the gate belonged to. But it is more massive than ‘The Way’ ~

Now you come to mention it, those gates remind me of the ‘Strawberry Fields’ gates in Liverpool – from the Beatles song!

I had to go and look that up – I had always thought it was imaginary! Lovely red gates.

They are lovely, especially since they were restored. I used to live quite close to them. Driving past you often would see little groups of tourists on one of The Beatles tours.
