the darkness is midnight
the moon is misty
and all the stars are hiding
the man stands staring in the distance
his feet are poised
should he stay or should he go?
a moment later
the stars are back again
the moon is radiant
his soul brings hope
he straightens his hat
it’s time to go

For the visually challenged reader, this image shows a monochrome photo of a man wearing a suit and a hat, standing at the edge of a small stone bridge. The man is facing away from us. There is a full moon visible in the background and some trees. The whole scene is surrounded by fog.

Oh I love this transition of mood from sadness to hopefulness. Lovely poem Chris. Thank you so much for joining in.

You capture the mood of the picture beautifully, Chris. The darkness of midnight which always carries the hope of the dawn.
Short atmospheric verses which say all that needs to be said.
And leave the ending open – he will go, but which way will he take?

You said a LOT in four short stanzas, Chris. Beautifully written, and (as was mentioned in another comment) the transition to some hope was heartening.

And the tides are undecided, held by Selene’s hand… until the sound of one step, then another and another…
Moonlightful, Chris.

I’m always happy to see Selene – and Luna, of course.
Yes, let’s walk slowly, together…
Thanks, Nick.

I like the ambiguity of the last line – time to go – Is he turned toward life or death?

Thank, Val – I’m hoping he’s just going someway else. Maybe it’s better, too!

I don’t know why I love the moon, stars and the whole twilight, it is so much more but it seems so less at the same time. 🌟❤️
