The red-headed writer, aka the Raconteuse, had been staying in her bolt hole place, a tiny flat right up on the rickety stairs, in Montmartre, near the cemetery; a useful place where she’d already sold her little picture for her tidy profit, just a week ago.
Now it was time to go, she grabbed her important things in her big bag; all she would need was some new warm clothes, buying them from a small boutique shop.
Soon she was making her way to the train, taking her to Charles de Gaulle airport, where she had been many times; she also liked to move around from place to place, often in different continents, but she’d never been to Iceland, it would be the coldest place she’d ever been.
After the usual performance to get in the plane and take off, including keeping her eyes shut for a couple of minutes, everything was fine; now she was quite happy to enjoy her gin and tonic, and look forward to seeing some of her friends from the Cafe, although what there were all doing was a mystery to her for the moment.
About three hours later, she’d been reading most of the time, but now there was a great deal of turbulence, as she put everything away and buckled up her seat belt tightly; she looked out from the window, and suddenly a huge plume of fire burst out from the volcano as it erupted.
‘Brace, brace, brace,’ yelled the captain.

Talking about explosive development, Chris 🌋
( Btw, that is why pilots are thanking the passengers for flying with them prior to landing… even themselves are not certain they will😆)

I’m sure it’s just a precaution for the pilots!

This reminds me of a frog in a pot of warm water. Not a problem until it gets HOT. Gin & tonic plus sleep makes a good flight…until you hear Brace! Brace! Brace! Good one Chris. Blondie is always welcome.

Glad that you enjoyed that – and Blondie, of course. Thanks, Darnell
PS – I will be reading yours soon😉

😱 A volcano?? Oh no! She’s in for an adventure! I don’t know why I didn’t realize in your previous story that she was the one sneaking the photo at the museum. An unexpected plot twist. 🤔

Some things just pop into my head. I hadn’t realised what was going to happen until it did! Now it’s going to be a bit tricky… 😂

There’s a lot going on in Iceland at the moment Chris… we all seem to be there! No volcanoes where my/our lot are though! I’m sure the Raconteuse will be fine!

Lovely stuff, Chris. I had a friend who was taxiing to the runway on her way to a vacation when Eyjafjallajokull erupted in 2010. Needless to say, the holiday was cancelled!

Thanks, Matthew. We got stuck to go back to the UK when we’re visiting SA there in 2010. 6 months later we decided to stay in SA forever. By the way, I’m very impressed that you can say Eyjafjallajokull!

Yikes!! One more good reason (among many) not to travel by air.

Nice and suspenseful and a reminder of why I do not like to fly, and don’t if I can help it.

Yes, it’s probably better not to fly, but it’s too late for the red-head!

Hmm… Here’s hoping Captian Sulley is flying and can land safely. If he can land in the Hudson River – maybe he can land anywhere!! Hope they all land safely! I wonder if it is safer to fly towards (not into) the ash than to try and flee from it and get all that ash in the engines…

Hmm, indeed! I’m thinking about this just now🤔 Maybe there’s something that you’ve said, Jules…

Ah… in talking with hubby… the best thing is to figure out which way the ash is drifting and fly as fast as possible away. He realted that there was a plane that actually had that happen (Brittish Airways 1982). The ash not only clogged the engine but grazed the windshield glass. They didn’t know then about the really bad consiquences – smoke started to fill the cabin, but it wasn’t unusual because in 1982 folks could still smoke on airplanes. Thankfully the amazing piolits got one engine started and were able to safely land. Now of course there is also better weather and radar flying near an active volcano is unlikely to occur.

Thanks Jules and you hubby! That’s really helping me – and I think I’m on the right track! Thinking now, I remember about the huge volcano in Jakarta… that’s the one, I believe.🌋

They did land in Jakarta… Mt. Galunggung on the Island of Java. 🙂 (Hubby looked it up.)
Glad we could help… They (the pilots did an instrament only landing because they couldn’t see out of the cockpit windsheild! And once they landed they couldn’t taxi…
