PS – my last name, Hall, sounds very similar to the word ‘hol’ in Afrikaans, and it’s rather rude.
Let’s just say it’s called ‘bottom’.

There were so many merciless taunts which were generated from my last name in middle and high school. It was so frustrating, We truly don’t get to choose.

I feel your pain, Chris… but it could be worse.
My first name as Niko, sounds like in Egyptian with a word meaning I fck.
Imagine my girlfriend outside of a mosque calling me: Niko, Niko.
Local men were looking at her with renewed interest, local women wanted to hunt her down 🤣

Oh! That’s so interesting! I was wondering what was wrong with the rather normal last name Hall. Now I see. As Jude said, stay safe. I’m so sorry that the US is making the world more dangerous for everyone.

Oh, but it’s not a problem really for me, and not either in South Africa. It’s pretty okay at the moment. I have just a funny name, since me and my hubby moved from UK to SA about 15 years ago. I had no problem in the UK, I guess I should have changed my name when I got married, but I kept by maiden name because I was the last ‘Hall’.

I thought “Hall” was about as neutral last name as you can get. Not so in South Africa apparently!

Well, it’s not so much the name, but rather the way it’s said here. Still no one worries about the name ‘Halls Extra Strong Mints’ and that’s all round the world, even in SA!
