‘Oh gosh… look up. There’s something very wrong up there.’
The two boys stared for a bit, and then they walked around the carousel.
‘That’s what she has lost, and it’s a terrible shame, don’t you think?’
‘It was so windy and wet, the rain had been pouring all night.’
‘It was very dark and there was a great storm lashing around, remember?’
They continued to look up.
‘She isn’t afraid though, despite what happened. She is still proud and she holds her head up high.’
The two boys walked around again.
‘I wonder what happened though? I mean, she’s still a horse, but…’
‘Shall we have a look?
They tried looking around the various rides, but they had no luck.
‘Oh well, at least the sun is shining now.’
‘And we can take our cagoules off.’
They look at each other.
‘Just before we go, let’s look up once again.’
‘She’s still handsome, being a horse, but really she’s a unicorn, isn’t she?‘
‘And maybe she still has some magical powers, don’t you think?
‘Okay, time to sing now, and we will show our true colours.’
‘That’s right, we’re red!’

Posted for The Unicorn Challenge, a magical challenge hosted by Jenne Gray and C E Ayr, where they provide a photo and we, in turn, provide up to 250 words.
PS – it’s football – and it’s Liverpool (where we used to stay)
And also a song from Carousel – a musical hit!
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
For your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
Songwriters: Oscar Hammerstein II / Richard Rodgers

Well, just a little fun with this one… apart from Liverpool FC (from the UK)! ⚽
Thanks, Dave.

Love this Chris, and the song was one of Mum’s favourites. She wanted (and had) Gerry and the Pacemakers version played at her funeral.

Great song and for every occasion. Many people still hear the chant from Gerry and the Pacemakers though.

This is so sweet. Of course she still has magic powers!

I do admire the way in which you write dialogue, Chris – it always comes across as natural speech.
Lovely tale (and a lot to sing about this season for the Reds!).

What a delightful read Chris, this is beautiful and leaves me wanting more … that song has always moved me (I still don’t understand why they sing it at soccer matches, the song is much deeper than a leather ball comp).

Aww, thanks so much, and yes it is a lovely tune. However, the football thing is very important for certain people, like from Liverpool FC. We are Reds and we will never forget!

I doubt a unicorn ever loses all her magic, Chris, and I’m sure she’s rooting for the Reds!
Lovely story.

That was a great photo – very useful I thought. Plus, that unicorn was right again: Man City 0 vs Liverpool 2 yesterday evening!

I always learn so much from your poems and stories! New vocabulary word: cagoules. And for some reason I never knew “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein. 😮 Seems like I should have known that, at least!

Well, a cagoule is very British. I had at least two when I was a nipper, always bright blue, maybe because it’s always raining! But I didn’t know about R & H until I started to write my book about YNWA – I only knew about Liverpool Football Club as they all sing the chant!

I looked it up and even found a recording of it done by Andrea Bocelli😀I might have to add that to one of my playlists.
