‘Come on, we can have a race between ourselves, it will be fun.’
‘Definitely, especially since our mountain bikes are best in the woods and the hilly bits.’
The two boys looked back to see the end of their village.
‘Now we are in the proper country – rolling hills and streams.’
‘It’s not too far, but far enough.’
‘Shall we go?’
They looked to each other and grinned.
‘Now it’s time to race.’
‘On your marks, set and… go!’
They went up and down and around, over a couple of streams – they were rather wet and muddy, but who minded? They were biking fast as they were riding neck and neck. Then they came to a huge oak tree in the middle of the track – one went left, the other went right… both were still neck and neck, even though the trees and bushes were getting denser and higher.
They were almost at the top of the largest hill, but suddenly a little glade opened up. The two boys stopped dead.
They mouths fell open.
And what did they see? Can you guess?
I think they will whisper…
‘We saw a couple of unicorns who darted out, and then disappeared.’
‘Did we see them, or not.’
‘Maybe it was just a double take?’
You decide! 🦄🦄

Possibly spotting unicorns would sure beat seeing Bigfoot. 🙂 Another excellently imaginative piece of writing, Chris!

Yay! Unicorns again! I was afraid they were going to get in an accident with their bikes, so glad that’s all it was!

Wonderful story and delightful tie up with the host’s mascot.
I just bought online, the Sunflower Tanka. Waiting for shipment to arrive. I’ll be reviewing as many poems as I can. Will you be interested to be interviewed regards to your poetry? I intend to go around and ask as many poets as I can, for an interview. I drafted 6 questions. I can paste them here after you give the green light. Or I can email you.

Delightful tale, Chris.
And clearly your boys are in Scotland, the only place where the Unicorn still runs free!

But, of course, those two boys were in Scotland – so they found the couple of unicorns, plus a few haggis’s as well!😄

Of course they saw them – why wouldn’t they?
What a wonderful story, Chris, with beautiful imagery.
And the rising tension and speed in the paragraph ‘They went up and down and around…’ is so strong.
It’s a terrific story!

If narwals can exist, why not a unicorn or two? 😀

Perhaps they do/did exist. Too much smoke for there not to be fire to this lore. I think.

I think so, too. Especially since I have read various things about unicorns, like for example, Harry Potter😉

Yap. And Rowling also drew from even older lore
