Earlier she had been far too busy to do anything but eat and drink, since she’d had a very late breakfast (or brunch); she had been umming and arring about the menu for ages, as Tom was on leave, and Mimi was not here either. In the end she plumped for a couple of small pancakes with bacon and syrup (very proper for those American people, as she grinned), and in the meantime she munched some toast with butter and jam, or was it marmalade she wondered for a moment, but anyway everything was delicious, and she drank two coffees as well.
She went back to her usual booth where she opened her laptop, she was so happy that it had been fixed by this clever guy, since it took more than three days to work properly again. Without her laptop she had to write things down using paper and pen or pencil, and now she had so many notes and scribbles in her little notebook – what a mess! – but at least now she could continue to write on that laptop.
She had been working for more than an hour, but then she walked over to the bar, she smiled and waved to her great friend, the Bartender, while the tall, thin man gestured to the small group in the corner, and now, of course, she would be earwigging again.

I had never heard of the word “earwigging” before, and looked it up to see that it meant secretly listening to a conversation. Thank you, Chris, for the education — and for the latest absorbing installment.

‘Earwigging’ must come from the UK (and also SA) – I have known that almost forever! It’s excellent to listen into other people (it’s only a bit rude).😊

It’s nice to be back at the Six Sentence Cafe for munchies. As an American, I say bacon goes with everything! Also, an empty bar means enough quiet time for earwigging. Does the red headed woman wear “cheaters” too? (the name for eye glasses in the 1950’s)

Oh gosh, I’ve also learnt a new word too – ‘cheaters’. Good word for me (and her) since we both use cheaters glasses! Thanks, Darnell. 😊

And don’t forget your cigar – I left it on your table with a glass of Churchill’s Late Bottled Vintage Port, courtesy of the VIP stash of our BarTender.

Wow, what a great performance of “Breakfast in America”! The only earwig I know about is the insect variety. (Nasty little things.)

Such a good song, isn’t it!
I know lots of people dislike earwigs but they are good insects, and they look after their babies… really!

Haha, double points for you, Penn!😉 And yes, bacon seems wrong on pancakes for us in the UK! 😊

Most definitely Chris, … I’d eat it separately, … I do like bacon too, …(Now what shall I do with my loyalty points?😉)….💙

Fun Six*… the SSC&B is, as (one of the Doctrine’s installments this week infers) always there for those (of us) inclined to find it… a place that is as magical as it’s patrons (and reg’lars and employees and, of course, it’s Proprietors)
*and excellent ‘walk-on’**
**Readers? a walk-on is a thing where, when a location/setting from a serial story is established (including layout and features) such as the Six Sentence Café & Bistro, other writers of Sixes are extended an invitation to use the contemporaneous setting for their own Six. Chris is, of course, one of the five Proprietors (in this fictional place)… so she right at home.

Always happy to help out with a walk-on… or maybe more, since La Raconteuse will be hanging around for a while. Yes, that’s right… hanging around and doing some writing (hopefully)!

Although I like writing with a pen on paper it is good to have a working laptop.

There is nothing like a good ‘earwig’ when you are sat in a café, pretending to mind your own business – nice one Chris 😃

Absolutely… and why not? If you are a writer it’s often useful to include something other people are talking about. 😉

I’m not sure why that is Chris – I usually respond through the notifications – maybe they are not coming through – I’ll have to check

It is a bit odd how our pancakes are for breakfast and are served sweet. Too much is served sweet here.
Writing the old timey way, I’d use note cards, and then I could put them in order where that idea or this sentence should come in the story.

I do like what you just said about your writing and about all those stories that you have done. Clever!
