Tread with trepidation
It’s so, so dry. Look at the grass, it’s brown. It’s dying or dead. Ridiculous! Actually it’s not just ridiculous, it’s rather worrying. I have never known a summer as scorching as this. Although 1976 was pretty similar. Gosh, that was a long time ago.
The worrying thing now though is this. It’s El Niño effect. And that is going to be brutal. It’s already beginning. There is drought, wildfires and heat waves too. Then on the other side there will be torrential rain with floods.
Now we need to think. Crops, livestock and infrastructure will reduce food production and disrupt markets. As supply falls, prices rise and food becomes less affordable. When combined with existing pressures such as conflict these climate shocks can quickly increase hunger.
so brace, brace and brace
many things will be required

Wow that is pretty scary. I just finished listening to the book “The Worst Hard Time” on Audible, about the Oklahoma dust bowl. It was 9 hours long, and it highlights the lives of several families who lived in that area and survived 5 years of drought in the early 1930s. I had always known about the migration of people from the dust bowl to California but I had never had any idea of how bad the dust and wind storms really were. And I also hadn’t known that it was due to years of plowing up the prairie to plant wheat, and then letting the land go unplanted because there was an excess of wheat. When the wind came there was nothing to hold down the topsoil and it just blew away. Your poem made me think about how it could possibly happen again somewhere…

Now that was very interesting, and I didn’t know anything about that. Things do happen in many countries. However, it seems to get more difficult with the climate changes.

We can think. We can prepare. But mental health says not to dwell. What I’ve read so far for these effects next year is that it’s uncertain which effects will hit where.

Sounds like everywhere – the weather is trick. Time to stock up on can goods and possibly if one is inclinded to can foodstuffs. My hubby isn’t a fan of canning. But I try to keep some things in the freezer. Still one also worries about fuel and electric…
It is a trying time to be living, but better than the pandemic! Keep positive.
