I cringe. Images of the carnage wrought on Gaia’s beautiful planet crowd my thoughts: animals fleeing from a from a flaming forest, a child staring into the dusty desert that once was her home; chain reactions of a human population run rampant and out of control.
I shut them out; there is work to be done. I, the Initiate, have been given the tools and absorbed the theory; I am capable of harnessing volcanoes and tsunamis. Through astral projection and words of suggestion: famine, war and plague, I’ll bring them all!
Casting qualms aside
I take up Gaia’s mantle
she whispers to me.

Written in response to two challenges:
– Di of Pensitivity101‘s Wednesday’s Three Things Challenge – CAPABLE, CRINGE, REACTION
– Denise Farley of GirlieOnTheEdge‘s Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt – THEORY
I have also set myself the additional challenges of confining my piece to 100 words exactly and writing this, now ongoing story, in the haibun form. Just for fun!

Great immersive story, Chris!

What a cool haibun, and a form I don’t associate with SSS. But you did it so well!

Makes me wonder what Gaia would really say if she could see what we do to her planet.

Yow!*
Liking the serial**
Astral projection!!! yayy surely the second most enjoyable experience of college dorm life! Still remember it.
…sorta
Good Six, yo
*compliment on both a voice that allows one to engage within a scope (of story) that seems, pretty much gigantic… which provides even more forward momentum
** kinda with that identification that musicians might feel, one hearing another approach a difficult passage… admiration and consternation (Probably more a reflection of my own experiences with the process of ‘writing live’, i.e. ultimate seat-of-the-pants in that you have a story and character(s) and, as we sit down to add a chapter, there is that combination of wonder, anticipation and suspense… ‘I wonder what’s gonna happen next!/jeez, I hope they’ll tell me what happens next!’ lol

Thank you, Clark! You have me bang to rights over my approach to these. And that is where the fun lies! I’m delighted you’re enjoying the ride… where next, I wonder?

Sounds spooky, but I think something like that is coming. I usually think of end times famines, wars and plagues coming through Revelation.

Maybe it is Gaia’s revenge? The world’s population is getting a rough shake up at the moment.

Indeed, we push this world beyond its limits, and wonder why it blows its top.
