Eschaton

Leaving the devastated city behind, the road leads me past pockets of people, scattered across wildernesses where they scratch a living. Their eyes hollow and dark, they stare at me as if I’m a ghost; perhaps I am – I have no hunger, no thirst, I just walk and watch, a dignified presence on the periphery of a broken world.

Time and existence are unravelled; I know not over which continent I travel. A shining figure in the distance beckons. I hasten, knowing she will lead me home.

Rapture transports me
out of carnage and decay:
bound to be reborn.

Written in response to two challenges:

– Di of Pensitivity101‘s Wednesday’s Three Things Challenge – TRANSPORT, DIGNIFIED, ROAD
– Denise Farley of GirlieOnTheEdge‘s Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt – WALK

I have also set myself the additional challenges of confining my piece to 100 words exactly and writing this, now ongoing story, in the haibun form. Just for fun!

  1. The title word is matched perfectly by the ambience of your writing.
Last and furthest point away are the two meanings used in Hellenic, and they are both encapsulated as you walk that continent!

  2. Eschaton most excellent word for the title*

So… the question is still open (and there is more of the path of the story to traverse)… as to the true end, the final resolution. An ending illumination or a joining of light.

    Fun Six.

    * I looked it up, a) to be sure and 2) because it was a word used in one of the most enjoyable reads of the ’70s, ‘the Illuminatus Trilogy’ … the memory of the context is, as I write, returning and it was in the phrase ‘to eschew the Eschaton I didn’t bother to look up the word back then, so ‘Thanks! I once again enjoy what I read, so very long ago.

    • There is indeed more mileage to be had. I considered including an explanation of the title but I didn’t want to spoil the potential pleasure of a little dalliance down a rabbit hole should someone be so inclined 🙂
I now I pop off to look up the book… a talking porpoise in Atlantis… sounds superb!

  3. Coming home by that calling light after all that struggle and chaos. I wonder if any of the broken people left behind scratching a living can find their own kind of light too? Another good episode, Chris 😊

  4. I had to look up the title word too, but not until I finished reading your SSS. Great word for your title!
Great reminder of what is to come.

  5. I admit to googling the title before reading your Six, lol. Knowing definition intensified the image you used and complimented story nicely. Very visual; implications for the future totally up in the air, at least for our protagonist/antagonist. For the rest of humanity, it appears to be a huge question mark.
    Excellent installment this week!
