just outside in my office
tanka Puente
a new brood, that’s life
these are guinea fowls, cheeky;
here’s the family
there’s mom, dad, aunt and uncle
and here’s the best one – young’un!
~~ “Tame birds sing of freedom. Wild birds fly.” John Lennon ~~
a new guinea fowl
learns to chatter and squawk, a lot
he’s bigger each day
and now he’s a teenager
such fun we’re having, we’ll wave

For Colleen Chesebro‘s TankaTuesday #46 — 6 January 2026, where this week’s host Willow Willer’s invitation is to write syllabic poetry in the form of a puente [using a quote as a three-stanza poem’s bridge]. The selected quote’s topic is to be the writer’s choice. On the topic(s) of ‘new beginnings for the new year or your life.‘

hen peck
and then
tongue in beak
squawk and grow

Busy little one, and not so little now – I think he’s a boy, but I might be wrong.

What an interesting poem form. Beyond my ability to write. Fun to read.

Hmm, I would say: Nonsense! Of course you could do something like that.😊

Your poem, dear Chris, beautifully conveys the spirit of gathering with loved ones in a warm, cosy setting: be joyful and embrace freedom!
Tame birds sing of freedom. Wild birds fly, well said, John!

These fun big birds are great, but so messy. I must get my broom out and make it tidy again! – So glad I found a quote from JL. 💛🦃😅

75 guinea fowls in your yard? My goodness, what a racket! 😅

It sooo was.. the neighbors had them for ticks on the sheep for mowing purposes. Then the dogs ate them one by one. Don’t get me started.. lol

How cool is that!! I love seeing pictures of where you live and of your pets. Do you raise them or is it a random family that just picked your yard to live in?

Those 5 guinea fowls are completely free to roam, but they like to come here most days. They fly into our yard, they poke around in the bushes and plants, they will drink and eat some bird seed, and they will fly off again. They often get confused about how to fly over the gate though! 😅

Lovely birdies. Do you get eggs from them?

No eggs for us. These guinea fowls are completely wild. Not sure where they lay, but not in our yard.
