Ship Ahoy! (or boat, in fact)
This is a beautiful boat,
sailing around a huge ocean.
It has been a peaceful time so far,
but I can see a storm ahead.
So mind the tillers and stuff.
The rudder needs to be straight and safe;
it’s going to be a long night and day.
And it was, and worrying,
but the following day,
it was lovely again.
Next stop will be Cape Town.

This image shows a sailboat in a vast body of water. The skyline/horizon is clear, and the water is calm. This photo was taken from another boat nearby.
Written in response to Sadje‘s What Do You See #328 photo prompt.

That is the ocean for you- calm one day and turbulent the next, coming back to being calm again. A lovely poem Chris. Thanks for joining in.

Thanks so much, Sadje. Such a nice photo, I could watch those boats for ages… but from a safe distance. I am not a sailor myself, despite my poem!

A ship on the way home!? There is always up and down, but we keep going through.

Yes indeed, ships and boats definitely go up and down, and to me I feel rather queasy!

may not be a straight and easy sail but you’ll get there

HM to reading it? Gosh! And maybe the character, ‘Starbuck’. (NOT a coffee shop). Thanks, Dave.

Who would be a sailor? Certainly not me!

The boat looks a little small for a huge ocean. (Sez the landlubber.)

I think that small boat needs to be able to see the edge of the shore.
Landlubbers indeed! 😂

A lovely story in the poem. Chris was this metaphor for marriage??

It could be, couldn’t it! At least a proposal since I’m thinking about the two huge beautiful cormorants who stand up on the Liver Birds building in Liverpool, UK. There are called Bertie and Bella! I should change the place from Cape Town to Liverpool – since I used to stay there.

Chris, what a beautifully simple yet profound observation — the ocean as a metaphor for life’s constant ebb and flow feels so effortlessly true here

Ah yes, the ocean rises and falls, time and time again…
Thank you so much for that!

I’ve been on a big ship overnight… but not a small craft. Could be very peaceful, or maybe scary depending on how experienced the crew is! I went and took a little visit – quite a bit of water around Cape Town! 🙂

I have to say I’m not a great sailor myself. Big boats like ferries are okay – many times we have been in the Greek Islands, and mostly fine. We once went from the UK to Spain in the Bay of Biscay and that was very choppy, and not nice at all. Narrow boats in the UK are much better on a canal. As far as Cape Town, I would say just stay on the land – too vast from there!

I enjoy all water. Warm oceans best, but little water places are OK too. I think I let others swim in cold lakes though! We’ve got a big river here that hubby and I kayaked in. I’d like to do that again when the weather gets warmer. Our little creek isn’t deep enough to kayak from one end to another (where the roads cross over it). I tried when we borrowed one when we had a tree fall in the creek.

I love this Chris. The poem reflects that calm waters can turn tumultuous but the next day can be full of sunshine in contrast.
