It’s not a prison now, but it was a kind of prison in the past.
I was only a kid, and I had been eavesdropping, but this time this was something more important. Dad and granddad had been talking quite quietly, but their voices became louder. I couldn’t understand what they said. It didn’t make sense to me.
I’d mostly forgotten about all of this, but something triggered in my head.
And that’s why I’m waiting here.
There’s a ledger, and I’m almost sure I will find her. She’s called Mary, and she was a fallen woman, my great aunt.

My story is almost real. Some of my cousins are trying to work out what happened to Mary. She was my Great Aunt Mary – our same Granddad.

Very evocative, Chris. All families have secrets, past and present, and of course things that were considered shameful in past times were often things that were just…human.

Aha, you have done a lot of delving in your family history haven’t you. But this is very new for me, so it will be a very long time before anything will appear, I’m thinking. ‘Later’ as we will say!

Quite possibly, but dreadful. We know so little in that side of our family, although I do remember my grandfather originally came from Nottingham (but that is in the UK).
