On the blank screen
the cursor blinks
Impatiently?
Accusingly?
Like a heartbeat?
A countdown?
Close your eyes
Listen and look
Whoโs there?
What are they doing?
Write it down
Quickly! Quickly!
Be nice to them
Nurture them
Or one day they
your characters, might run away.
And then where would you be?
Very true! Always worth jotting down fresh ideas ๐

I have a notebook by my bedside for those 3 o’clock in the morning revelations which often turn out to be nonsense in the light of day ๐

Thatโs really good! I would have never thought of the concept in quite that way ๐

Ah well, you’ve heard from some of my ‘clamouring’ characters before ๐

I always get the feeling my characters still exist when I’m not writing. ๐

Absolutely! I have one particular character who often bangs on my brain. He had a supporting but important role in the cast of my last novel and now and he wants the staring role in another book. Maybe he’ll get his wish ๐

The main character of my first novel had only a minor role in the original concept, somehow she pushed her way to the front and I ended up writing the whole story based around her! ๐

Life without your characters can be pretty lonely! I always miss mine for a while after something is finished …

It’s quite a wrench to leave them and move on, isn’t it?

Strewth, don’t say that out loud. I’ve glued my characters down. Seriously though – a deeper question of dependence and creativity beyond process.

Oops, sorry. I should’ve whispered that. Although if they’re in my head..?
