Squirrels, an Acrostic Nonet Poem
Squirrel, are you in that drey over there?
Quite a place I imagine, is that right
Under and hiding in that palm tree
I definitely think I can see you
Room for many of them
Run out now, go on
Every one join in
Link up together
Scurrying
Written in response to this week’s Tanka Challenge hosted by Willow. She has asked us to think about what is happening underground. Seeds and bulbs are waking up, while roots are looking for nourishment and reaching out looking for communication and news. Little creatures and insects are all on the move.
PS – I hope I’ve got away with this. These squirrels are not quite underground, although they are under and hiding in our palm tree.

Wonderful post 🙏🎸

I love it Chris! I want a palm tree! X

Glad that you liked that, Carol Anne. Maybe you could get a small palm tree around your place, I am sure it would grow very quickly. It would be warm enough in Ireland.😉

You make this look so easy. My eyes scurry up and down the lines like the squirrels.

Are they red or grey squirrels?

No red ones, but there are two different types of squirrels here. We have grounds squirrels which are brownish colour with thinner tails and are from here, and also we have the grey squirrels which where brought out from Cecil Rhodes, back in around 1900.
Both types live together, even in our great big palm tree. Fascinating!

I love your palm tree, and how wonderful that the squirrels get on so well. My grandson, Nico, loved watching our squirrels run along the fence., and wanted to know why they didn’t fall down. 🥰

So well done. All these calls for acrostics this week wore my acrostic bone to a frazzle.

Oh dear, that’s a shame, Violet. Well, I have only tried one of those – and that was enough for this week for me!

A fun poem! (Just don’t those squirrels scurry into the attic and chew the wiring.)

Oh yes, fun to write, but you’re right, those pesky squirrels can be very bad in an attic or anywhere inside a roof. We sprinkle cayenne pepper in the edges in order to keep them out.

I hadn’t hear of using cayenne pepper before. I wonder if it would on the deer and rabbits that insist on eating my hostas.

This is such a fun and creative take on the prompt—I love the imagery of squirrels hiding and scurrying around! It actually reminds me of how chaotic it was when we had our cabinets refinished recently; everything was “hidden away” for a while, and now it feels like a fresh start, just like those little creatures waking up and moving around underground. Great post!

I love this one! Squirrels are cute, I have them in my back yard too. There are a fair amount of palm trees in Fresno, in fact we had two of them years ago. The squirrels climb up in the tree on one side of my house and run across the roof and climb down the tree on the other side. Really you’re not supposed to have branches touching your roof, because rats can do that too, which would not be cool.

All those things seem very normal to both of us then! Such fun (smiling).🌴🐿️😊
