โNice review of โSextetโ, Ms Hall,โ says Connor, as Cynthia hands me a cup of coffee. โWould you like a little something in that?โ He waves a hip flask in my direction.
I shake my head. Itโs a bit early for me.
Connor pours a liberal slug into his own cup. โOf course, I find a slim volume always has an appeal; like those novellas that Leonardi chap’s written. I must say, I do like his work.โ
โConnor did very well with both his poetry collections at the Edinburgh Book Festival.โ Cynthia smiles at him proudly.
โPublicity, dโyou see.โ He takes a mouthful of coffee. โIsnโt it time you gave our book another little push? I mean, we know youโve only just released โThe Rabbitโโฆโ he chuckles. โโReleased the rabbitโ, rather catchy that, eh?โ
I nod in acknowledgement. I have used that, corny as it may be.
โOh, itโs a lovely story, Ms Hall. Quite charming!โ Cynthia interjects. โThat nice young woman, Ellie Scott, enjoyed it too, didnโt she? So nice toย hear fromย her.โ
โOur book’s done well in the ratings, but it doesnโt seem to have achieved quite the sales we might have hoped, does it?โ Connor rubs his chin.
โI thought it wouldโve sold loads more by now.โ Gina drains her coffee.
โThatโs what I wanted to talk to you all abโฆโ
Iโm interrupted by an instantly familiar beat coming from the flat upstairs. Gina rolls her eyes. โNot again! Iโve woken up to that song every morning since Bob moved into Lucyโs old room,โ she sighs. โHold on.โ Gina gets to her feet and hurries upstairs.
โIt has become a little tiresome,โ says Cynthia.
โYou can always bunk in with me, old thiโฆ Cynth.โ
Cynthia looks at him sharply.
The music stops. Moments later Gina returns followed by Gary and Bob who has Fingers perched on his shoulder. The little monkey chirrups when he recognises me, launching himself from Bobโs shoulder, via the back of Cynthiaโs couch, onto my lap.
Gina, Gary and Bob squeeze onto the couch and look at me expectantly. I stroke Fingersโs head.
โThe thing is, I may have made a misjudgment with the title.โ
โHow so, Ms Hall? I think itโs a lovely sentiment, using that pretty song from Carousel.โ Cynthia beams.
โYou mean the Liverpool football team anthem. Thatโs what itโs properly famous for.โ Gary thrusts out his chest which isย clad in the latest LFC team shirt. โBest team in the world!โ
โThatโs just the point, Gary,โ I say. โNot everyone would agree.โ
โMe Nan wasnโt best pleased with yer title. You know, being an Evertonian, like,โ said Bob. โI mean, she did read it, but only โcos of Fingers being in it.โ
Hearing his name, Fingers sits up and chatters.
โDo you think thatโs the reason? The title?โ asks Gina.
โQuite possibly. Certainly in the UK.โ I remember the reaction on Twitter back in July.
โSo what would you call it?
โIโm not sure, Gina.โ
โHow about โWe are the Championsโ,โ suggests Gary.
I frown.
โDon’t be daft, Gary,โ Gina digs him in the ribs.
โWell, we were all champions in the end, werenโt we?โ Gary holds his hands out. โI mean, Connor here…โ
I hold up my hand. โDonโt give away the plot!โ
โNo, well, yโknow what I mean.โ
Cynthia turns to Connor. โWhat do you think? Youโre so good with titles.โ
Connor rubs his hand across his face. โWhat about โThe Ruby Necklaceโ? Pierre giving Lucy that necklace is your inciting incident, isnโt it?โ
โThat fits in so well with your first book,โ Cynthia claps her hands together. โ‘The Silver Locket‘ followed by ‘The Ruby Necklace’. That would be perfect.โ
“And after that, ‘The Solitaire Diamond’..?” Gina touches her engagement ring.
I nod slowly.ย I wonder, maybe I should change the title?
The music referred to is ‘Blue Monday’ by New Order, which my flat-mate played loudly every morning for the whole of our last term at university.
