Naughty but Nice

The image shows shows a tray lined with brown paper filled with doughnuts.

Oh, how I crave your
sweet succulent charms
long to smell the perfume
of your honey-coloured skin

Oh, how yearn for your
sweet yielding softness
ache for the touch
of your full fragrant form

I hunger to taste
your deep spicy sweetness
to nibble, caress and
sate my desire

temptation takes over
my lips are a-tremble
I close my eyes
and swallow you up.

Bethelbert’s marvellous mystery machine

The image shows shows a rocky landscape, near the ocean. Overhead an old house with a few mechanical devices is floating in the sky on a small piece of land.

All aboard, all aboard!

Cogs whirr, chains clank
pistons pump and gears crank
hang onto your hats and don’t look down
Bethelbert’s ride is the best in town
feast your eyes on the folk down there
open-mouthed they stand and stare
passing over the hills and dales
the ocean’s in sight, do you see those whales?
clouds above and sea below
which way’s up I’d love to know
hold on tight and live your dream
in Bethelbert’s marvellous mystery machine!

Reaching for a rainbow

Varicoloured, head spinning, ebb and flow below
Easy now, no need to go
Reflect on your decision. No!
Taking my leave now
I’m stepping out
Gasping, grasping
Oblivion.

The image shows a view of a busy street from the top of a tall building. Down below you can see traffic and pedestrians.

Biding my time

Concealed behind that plain façade
silently observing yet unobserved
you creep along obscure corridors
listening at keyholes, capturing confidences
pocketing intrigues and salting them away.

Green mantle cloaked, you traverse the town
sniffing out secrets, ferreting for indiscretions
licking spoons that stir the pot
snatching skeletons from cupboards
to one day share and spill.

Nothing escapes your inimical attention
under your watch, people scarcely sleep
they mind their tongues, mind other people’s
but blank of countenance and with eyeless innocence
for now your secrets stay safe with me.

Day after Day

each night, enveloped in scarlet
golden sun slides under blue blankets
gossamer strands of lingering light
caress cooling sands
waves wash upon the shore, breaking
breaking, unceasingly breaking
erasing away the day

each night, cloaked in obsidian
silver moon shakes out her gown
scattering glittering pennies
over wine-dark skies
waves wash upon the shore, breaking
breaking, unceasingly breaking
hailing a new dawn

Dinner for Two

Dusk melts seductively
Into soft velvet
Night
Now darkness descends
Expectation
Revives

Forever, I’ll long to hold you again
On this date when I
Remember

This is our special night
When I set the table, anticipating, longing for you
Oh, I will always be longing for you.

The image shows a table set for two people. The location seems to be outdoors, in an alley

Your light still shines

In the calm of the evening
walking on wet sand
the soft scratch of silica
caresses my naked feet

I lift my face skywards
tasting the salt-laden breeze
sharpened by thyme-scented air
filtering from hushed hillsides

As the sun slips into the ocean
bronze and crimson flares flash
across the rolling cobalt waves
soon swallowed into darkness

Resting on a sea-smoothed rock
my feet wetted with cool water
I flare a sulphurous match
touching it to the lantern’s wick

A pool of golden light
fills the darkness of my heart
as I remember the evenings
when you were still here.

Little Wickedness

Porcelain cheeks, rosebud mouth
hide cunning mischief
that lurks inside.

Dropping your decorous robe
lascivious lips curl around
murmured persuasions
nuzzling nakedness
your smile
beguiles

A shiver down a sinuous spine
foraging finger tips fathom
a sharp intake of breath
sensuous rhythms
rock together
forever

Dawn slides into morning
decorum is restored;
appearance is all.

Ode to Selene

Starlight pricks heaven’s violet mantle

Evening shades fade to velvet umber

Luminous in languorous liquid light

Eternal sentinel of mortal slumber

Never failing, forever wax and waning

Enduring, eternal moon.

The image shows a young woman looking up at the sky where a new moon is visible. Her stance is meditative.

Selene is the Greek goddess of the moon. Her Roman equivalent is Luna.

Sands of Time

For visually challenged reader, the image shows a person walking in a desert, dwarfed by huge sand dunes. A long line of their footsteps can be seen behind them

sand
at the back of the throat
chords strung taut
bloated tongue, swells
says nothing.

time
runs through the hourly glass
empty now
confession calls
tell nothing.

life
sands of time spilling out
dunes shifting
time, after all
is nothing.
